Smith Myers announces three key appointments

New Appointment – Ewan MacDonald – Business Development Manager.

“Ewan has been with the company for several years now, as our Training Manager.  In this role he has created a truly effective training and support environment, including our training and simulation partnership with JD2E.  He has been working so closely with our customers that the transition for Ewan into leading our Business Development activities, is a natural one.” – Andrew Munro Managing Director.


Starting his career in the British Army in 1988, Ewan had a full and varied range of posts as an operator, trainer, training course designer, manager and policy maker. His outstanding military service being underlined by him reaching the esteemed rank of Warrant Officer Class 1. Since leaving the military in 2011 Ewan has brought his vast operational and training experience to industry in a number of Training Management and Business Development roles within the Defence and Aerospace industry.

Ewan assumes the role of Business Development Manager immediately.

New Appointment – Paul McKenna – Training Manager.

“We are thrilled to have Paul join our growing team.  With over 32 years of RF, Counter-IED,  Electronic Countermeasures and Precision Guided Munition experience, Paul will deliver training and technical support for our customers, assuming the role of Smith Myers Training Manager immediately.”  – Andrew Munro, Managing Director.


Paul joined the British Army in 1992 and enjoyed a full and decorated career, rising to the revered rank of Warrant Officer and an exemplary service record.  He served in a number of operational and training positions worldwide, in both benign and hostile environments. These included posts as an operational operator, trainer, training course designer and manager of a mixed military and civilian training team delivering training and operational support to classified capabilities.


Since leaving the military in 2016 Paul has been working for Thales as the customer support and training manager on both in service support and conceptual/novel programs.

Paul said, “I am excited to be joining Smith Myers and becoming a part of the mission to deliver life-saving capabilities, training and support to our customers.  It is an exciting opportunity to become part of a fantastic team with a meaningful mission.”

New Appointment – Paul Bowes – Technical Field Manager.

“Paul is a natural addition to our team.  Currently, the lead SIGINT payload developer/trainer with our close partner Robotics Centre, Ottawa, means Paul has already been working with our airborne equipment, training, demonstrating and maintaining systems as an overseas Field Service Representative.  Thanks to our partners Robotics Centre for enabling this transition.” – Andrew Munro Managing Director


Paul joined the British Army in 1998 and enjoyed a highly successful and decorated career of 22 years, before leaving in 2020. Throughout his distinguished career, Paul served as an operator, instructor and policy maker in the Signals Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Counter-IED domains, deploying to numerous hostile environments to support a diverse array of tasks for both regular and Special Forces operations.


Since transitioning to the Aerospace and Defence industry, Paul has continued to leverage his extensive knowledge and experience in the sector. Most recently, he served as the Lead Trainer & Field Service Representative with Ottawa-based Robotics Centre, focusing on their UAS cellular geolocation payload, ECHO, which is based on Smith Myers ARTEMIS system. In this role, he designed and delivered training programs, contributed to product development and demonstrations, and provided support to end-users.

Paul stated, “I am delighted to join the dynamic team and market leaders Smith Myers. This opportunity allows me to continue and extend my passion in this field and share my knowledge, experience and expertise with Search and Rescue organisations, Law Enforcement, and the Military.”

Paul will start his role with Smith Myers in September this year.
